Sydney's Vivid Festival 2019
WOOOOW!! Now in its 11th year, the Sydney Vivid festival kicked off on Friday, March 24th and it DID NOT DISAPPOINT! The festival itself is primarily focused on the display of light …. in all shapes and sizes. With over 50 individual pieces on display throughout the city, this can keep you busy for a week. There are big sponsors like Pixar and Samsung with some pretty spectacular installations but the main feature is the projection on the east facing side of the Sydney Opera House! This year’s artist is American, Andrew Thomas Huang and the piece is titled Austral Flora Ballet which features native Australian flora twisting, swelling, and morphing across the sails of the Opera House in a hypnotic choreographed dance.
Other highlights include projections on the Harbor Bridge, the Maritime Museum in Darling Harbor, and the Customs House. Interactive works are scattered throughout the Rocks neighborhood, Circular Quay, the Royal Botanic Garden, and Darling Harbor; and farther out in Taronga Zoo, Chatswood, and Luna Park.
Here is the official site for the festival, on now until June 15, 2019, every night from 6pm-11pm.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to see everything, but am happy to share some images of what I was able to visit, as it was an incredibly immersive experience that left me wanting to come back next year and see how new artists engage the public.
